My song is in E minor but I want to use an A flat minor chord. How do I do it?
The easiest thing would be to borrow g#m from the parallel major mode, which will sound exactly the same. If you really want an abm, I can explain how to get it, but that’s going to be much more complicated.
Hi SilentPaaw,
Thanks for your response but I’m afraid my knowledge of the terminology is limited. Isn’t there
just a simple way of entering a non diatonic chord?
It really depends on the specific chord you are looking for. You can easily access chords from parallel modes by placing the cursor in the chord staff and then selecting the mode you’d like to borrow from in the drop down menu at the bottom right.
All of the chords that are available this way (and some additional ones) can also be found by typing their respective names into the search bar.
However, there are also going to be a lot of non-diatonic chords that you won’t be able to find this way, so it’s always a good idea to think of alternative ways to spell the chord you are looking for - like in this case spelling it G sharp minor instead of A flat minor.
