I used to work with Scaler 2 a few month ago. Now I’m 100% on Hookpad but there’s a few features I’m missing:
- different voicing of chords
- ways to modulate from one key to another in various ways
- library of great progressions (rock, pop, cinematic, moods etc.)
perhaps it’s already there and I’m just to dumb to find it though.
Hi and thank you for your requests. I think Hookpad has a bit of a different use-case than scaler. I think the midi patterns/chord progressions in scaler are more about helping you with songwriting and tweaking MIDI for your DAW in a granular way. Hookpad on the other side is more about writing chords and a melody and perhaps getting together a basic band which lets you control if your songs works in a certain style. Of course we’re always trying to get the bands as good and the midi as reusable as possible, but it’s not our main focus. So we won’t have an editor where you can tweak the resulting midi of a chord progression down to the last note.
-
As for the voicing, we don’t show the voicing alone but at Hookpad all instrument patches are a combination of rhythms and voicing. We can’t tweak the voicing for individual chords but when tweaking the octave slider you can set a top note to which all voiced chords try to stay as close as possible. So you can choose if all chords in that band for that instrument are voiced a bit higher or lower.
-
That’s an interesting idea. We have key changes but we provide no help at the moment how you can get from one to another key. That’s something to think about.
-
We have some of the most popular progressions in Hookpad right now but they are not sorted for genres. I’m not sure if you found that yet.
We also have Magic Chord which helps you finding your next chord.
And then there’s Aria, our AI which can write some chord progressions for you.
So in general Hookpad is more about helping you writing your own chord progressions than delivering pre-made progressions to click through.
Please let me know if that makes sense for you.
Regards!

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Much appreciated.
Well you’re doing a fantastic job so far with the bands. Opening the exported midi in Logic Pro works great, and it automatically selects really good instruments in Logic.
The only issue is that certain percussion instruments that sound fine in Hookpad are too loud in Logic like the tambourine, maracas, and shakers - but you can easily turn down the volume on these to fix it. After doing that and using the new mastering assistant in Logic it sounds better than anything I have ever created from scratch in Logic.
Thank you very much for your great feedback!
Yes, the volumes are always a bit of a problem as they are reacting a bit different in all DAWs. But I’m very happy that you’re able to get a good result in Logic with the exported MIDI files!
