Is there a way to insert rather than overwrite when copying and pasting on a Mac?
click on the place where you want to paste and click edit->paste from clipboard
you need to insert fresh measures first, then paste, otherwise the default paste overwrites.
Yes, there is a way. Hookpad has two different entry modes, Table and Text. You can select them in the settings or press the keyboard shortcut “M” to toggle between those two.
Text mode works like in a text editor, if you insert or write something new, everything that’s coming afterwards is shifted to the right.
Please let me know if this helped.

did not know that. this will definitely help improve my workflow
The insert entry mode, whilst welcome, seems very flaky and mysterious. Sometimes it works, often it doesn’t. E.g. it works for a few bars then stops working. I’ve tried inserting both notes and chords using ‘m’ mode.
Repro:
- New project
- Press 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 to enter those chords
- Position the cursor between 1 & 2
- Press ‘m’
- Press 5 5 5 5
Notice the V chord is inserted twice but then stops being inserted.
Lots of other reproducible cases where ‘m’ mode works and then doesn’t. Perhaps I’m holding it wrong?
Also, when I enter ‘m’ mode, I see a long duration C note, in grey, appearing at the beginning of the first bar of the song, and extending for several bars - why is that, and what does it mean? Sometimes that C note extends to the current insertion point, other times it extends to somewhere else, it seems random. There is no other visual indication of being in ‘m’ mode, which I think there should be.
