Sufjan Stephens - Should Have Known Better: Help Request

I’m currently working on this song: http://www.hooktheory.com/hookpad/view/7boascFyxV8l

I feel like I’ve got it pretty close, however I’m having a little bit of trouble. I don’t think the G chord should be a 2nd inversion but the B sounds more prominent in the recording than in a natural G major.

It’s just a little hard to discern exactly whats going on since there are two guitar parts that are playing either the root or the inverted root. When you try to pick one or the other it sounds like it’s missing something. If anyone has suggestions let me know!

There’s a lot going on here, but if you added a melody you could put in the most prominent guitar stuff, though that’s completely up to you. Adding a maj7 to the C/E chord and maj6 to the last two would help as well. For the inversions I think you should go with the lowest note rather than the one that sounds most prominent, so I’d agree with everything you have, except for the A major chord, which has a prominent C# note but isn’t actually inverted. (Btw the C/E doesn’t have to be an applied chord, since C is already a diatonic chord in the scale.)

Awesome. I finished it up here http://www.hooktheory.com/theorytab/view/sufjan-stevens/should-have-known-better

I didn’t feel up to tabbing out the extra guitar melodies but I did finish the rest of the song if you want to take a look. I tried to pay attention and only use 1st inversions where it was really implied that the 1 was inverted. There also may be some 7 chords in there, I tend to miss those.

Honestly I knew just about nothing about theory coming onto this website and I was tabbing almost entirely by ear, but I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of it. Thanks for the help.
