Sliding Edit for Melody?

Is there any way to setup so that down stream notes slide with position, rather than immediate change the length if the next note?

I’m noodling with melody and don’t know how long I’ll hold notes and have not found a good way to tweak them as I work down. I don’t know if I’m missing some secret or if it just requires cutting all notes downstream and modifying, then pasting again.

For example, I decide I want this word to be a run down a few notes. So I want to lengthen it and split it twice to make 3 notes. Say C → B → A. And this requires making a 1/4 note into a half. Ideally I would turn on the mode and when I drag a note the relative timings of notes downstream are preserved, but their position in the song moves.

Right now I need to cut all notes downstream (at least to a pause) and then lengthen the note and paste again. Tons of possibility to lose something.

Actual in playing around I hoped that selecting notes and then changing the length of a previous unselected note would do this. It does not, but might be a good way for this to work.

Marque select notes you want to slide and adjust the note in front of them and it slides the selected forwards (for note longer) or backwards (for note shorter).

Hi,

You could try going into the Settings and setting the Entry Mode to “Text”. In that mode, when you shorten or lengthen a note, all notes after it in the same line will keep their original length but shift their position — which sounds like the sliding behavior you’re looking for.

Please let me know if this helped.

I don’t see any change in behavior with either mode selected. Both only change the immediately following note.

Looks like at sometime I changed to that mode to try and figure out what it does and never found any change. Just started a new project with it set to see if it was locked somehow at the start of the project, but still only seeing the single follow note impact.

Hi,

There should always be two ways to change the length of a note. If you drag right at the edge, you’ll be modifying both notes so the total length stays the same. But if you drag a little before the edge, you should see another cursor — then when shortening the note, the adjacent note won’t be affected.

Right now it looks like that second cursor isn’t showing up in Text mode, which seems to be a bug. I’ll bring this up with the team so we can fix it.

In the meantime, you can adjust the length of notes with the hotkeys H to ;, which will let you tweak durations without shifting the following notes.
