When writing a multi-section transcription for TheoryTab, how do you organize and save the sections as you’re working? Do you write as much as possible in one file before splitting it up, or work in separate files from the beginning? Have you discovered any tricks to make this easier?
Before I even begin transcribing a piece that doesn’t follow the typical pop song structure, I listen through the whole piece once and take note of how many sections there are and how I’m going to label them. If there are more than 6 individual sections, I usually have a look at the list of section names that are available on the database and think about how I’m going to use them in a way that makes some kind of sense.
If a piece has a lot of very short sections it sometimes makes sense to merge multiple sections of the song into one TheoryTab section. Once I know how I’m going to label the sections, I transcribe each section in a separate Hookpad project.
If the song doesn’t change the key, time signature or tempo between its sections, you can just start each new section by opening the file you created for the first section, deleting everything in the piano roll and saving it as a new file, so you don’t have to set the key, meter, tempo and youtube link everytime you start a new section.
Other than that I personally don’t see any advantage in transcribing a whole song in one Hookpad project, so I can’t give you any advice on how to make working with multiple files easier, as that is the way that makes the most sense to me.
Thank you, that’s more or less what I’ve been doing. It felt a little inelegant, so I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t a way to make it easier, but it’s not too much of a hassle.
It’s often easier to work in one file initially to keep everything organized, then split it into separate sections once you’re ready to finalize. Using clear labels and consistent formatting helps streamline the process.
