Emulate the chord selection style of a particular artist

I just purchased Hooktheory this week, and I have one main objective: I want to emulate the chord selection style of a particular artist in my melodies. After reviewing Hooktheory’s documentation and videos, it seems I should enter three or four songs by the artist I’m trying to emulate, including their chords and melodies, and save them in my song library. Since I’m new to Hooktheory, I’m actually unsure where to save the songs so that I can use Hooktheory to analyze them for chord suggestions. Next, I assume I should enter my melody in a new project and click the magic button to review my melody while using the songs I’ve entered to get chord suggestions similar to those of the artist. Do I need to use Aria for this process, or is it not necessary to have Aria? Thank you

Hi, and thank you for your question!

I’m not sure we can do this exactly, but let’s try to break down those different concepts:

  • You can always open a song you like from our TheoryTab database in Hookpad. There you can save the song as your own project and then use the chord progression as start for a new song with your own melody and perhaps some slight changes of that chord progression.
  • Magic Chord: If you have started a chord progression, Magic Chord will give you suggestions for the next chords, based on a statistic which knows what chords other songs are using after the chords you already have in your project, but it doesn’t know anything about your melody or specific artist’s styles. Magic Chord comes with the usual Hookpad subscription.
  • Aria: If you already have a melody, you can use Aria to give you some fitting chord progressions for your melody. There is currently no way to train Aria to use only chords in a specific style, but if the melody reflects the artist’s vibe, the chord progression might do that, too. As Aria is our own AI which is producing additional server costs, Aria is available only as an additional subscription.

So there are multiple ways in Hookpad to get chord suggestions. Please let me know if any of those help.
