Hookpad: Logic Pro iPad Midi Import

My songwriting process is always Hookpad > DAW. So I have to import the exported midi files from Hookpad with the window-slide-technique to Logic on the iPad.

Does work but it would be great to have a midi file without patch/instrument info at the beginning. Because if I want to change the instrument to let’s say a Moog D or Marianna after the import and choose a certain preset in the plugin, the midi track will set it back to the instrument from Hookpad (this will then become a random patch in the plugin) as soon as the file is played from start.

Workaround for me: Add a one bar fake-intro in Hookpad and cut this bar away in Logic together with the somewhere hidden instrument/patch info.

Hope this may help others too. Great if there was an export option no instrument/patch infos

I had some issues with importing into Logic and found that it works better to create a project first and then add the MIDI from Hookpad. The specific problem I had was that when I just opened the MIDI with Logic, it put it into a weird mode where I was unable to pan or adjust line levels. Maybe a similar issue?

Hi, and thanks for bringing this up! I never had this problem with Studio One but there might be a difference in how the instrument information is handled. I think that there are generally two ways of importing MIDI into a DAW:

  1. Opening the Midi file with a DAW:
Here all instruments are read and it seems that logic might convert the information into an instrument bank automation or something like that
  2. Dragging the MIDI file into an already opened project:
Here the instrument and tempo and key information is usually lost to not destroy the already existing project.
So I think the second option might be a better approach for you.

Please let me know if this works!

Thank you so much Dennis for answering and the ideas. The problem is probably that my DAW in this specific case is Logic Pro on iPad. This Version can only import Midi in one way by drag and drop the file to the canvas. So I know this problem (which I have a workaround meanwhile that is not to bad) is actually an Apple problem not a Hookpad problem.

Bye the way: Knowing that you are one of the brains behind Hookpad: I soooo love it. And I hope it will exist for the rest of my life. Thank you for the effort you put into it.

Thank you so much for your kind feedback. That’s why we’re working hard on it!
